“When you realize you're learning from someone who's never been in school, that is a powerful experience,” says Dr. Glenn Geelhoed who has been bringing medical students to remote and underserved areas of the world for more than 40 years. Geelhoed, a professor of surgery at George Washington University Medical Center and founder of Mission to Heal, says the trips have two main goals: providing treatment in the short-term, and building local capacity to provide treatment going forward. But they also achieve something else: all of the 2,300 students who have done Mission to Heal trips have gone back to the communities they visited to continue contributing to improved care.
