Read My Lips host akaRadioRed brings you lively, unscripted, spontaneous, non-canned interviews with interesting authors on a range of topics. Listen LIVE on Mondays 7-8 pm/Eastern or anytime on-demand.

Topic: Suicide has reached such epidemic proportions that we all know someone affected by suicide – and we all have a part to play in reaching out to save lives.

The epidemic: The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates 800,000 people die by suicide each year –  more than annual deaths due to war and homicide combined. World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10 creates awareness of our role in providing support to the vulnerable, at-risk people we know or may meet.

Our expert: Adele McDowell, Ph.D is a practicing psychotherapist and former crisis hot-line responder, with 30+ years of experience helping people find hope and balance in the face of crisis, trauma and grief. She is the author of Making Peace with Suicide: A Book of Hope, Understanding, and Comfort (White Flowers Press, 2015). "Reaching out to anyone who feels disconnected or is struggling can be a life-saving act."

On READ MY LIPS today: Dr. McDowell will discuss…

Suicide risk factors and how to spot them
Fact or Myth: More suicides occur around Christmas? Women are more prone than men?
Ways to engage non-judgmentally with someone who needs support
Where to find professional services and ensure appropriate care
The role you as an individual, our communities and society play in responding to the epidemic
Assisted suicide

Dr. McDowell's book speaks to everyone who has lost a loved one to suicide, anyone who is considering committing suicide, and those who work with or counsel the bereaved and suicidal.
