China approves overhaul of Hong Kong's political system - a podcast by ABC Radio

China has passed sweeping changes to Hong Kong's electoral rules, further tightening its control over the city.

The number of directly elected seats in parliament has been cut almost by half and prospective MP's will first be vetted by a pro-Beijing committee to ensure their loyalty to the mainland.

Critics warn the reforms spell the end of democracy in Hong Kong with any opposition to the Chinese Communist Party effectively removed.
