Australia's decision to scrap a $90 billion submarine deal with France and in favour of a nuclear subs pact with the US and UK has enraged France, which slammed Australia's actions as a "betrayal" and recalled its ambassador in protest.

French ambassador Jean-Pierre Thebault says France felt angry and fooled by the AUKUS deal, given France was committing it's "most well-kept military secrets" to Australia.
