The Federal government is vowing to fight a UNESCO recommendation to place the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef on its 'in danger' list.

Josh Thomas, CEO of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, says the ruling was unexpected and they are "mildly disappointed" by it.
