The US city of New Orleans appears to have largely escaped catastrophe after its flood mitigation system prevented a hurricane and storm surge from inundating the city.

Hurricane Ida, a Category 4 storm, struck the Louisiana coastline exactly 16 years after it was devastated by the larger but less-powerful Hurricane Katrina.
