Former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says he supports calls for a moratorium on new coal approvals in NSW.

It comes as the NSW Government has appointed Turnbull to head the newly formed Net Zero Emissions and Clean Economy Board.

He says coal mining is "out of control" around the state, with mines approved which would have capacities vastly in excess of demand and would have significant impact on the environment.
