New South Wales says its nation-first zero extinction target will go some way to turning around Australia's poor extinction rate.

It's identified 221 sites as Assets of Intergenerational Significance which it hopes will protect 92 endangered species, but conservation groups say the protections needs to be extended beyond National Parks.
