Nurses say they are working harder than ever, and are not getting a fair deal.
At least 30,000 walked off the job today, demanding more pay and safer workplaces.
The strike has been running from 11am, and finishes at 7pm Wednesday.
A back up plan had to be put in place to make sure care could be provided for those who need it.
The DHB's national contingency planner Anne Aitcheson talks to Lisa Owen.
