New Zealanders desperately hoping for a ticket home are now having a go through the latest release of MIQ rooms. 3800 rooms are up for grabs in October, November and December.
The lobby - or the waiting room - opened at 5pm and thousands of people poured in. At 6pm those people were given a randomised number.
NRL ref Henry Perenara told Checkpoint he is 18,875 in the queue for the latest batch of MIQ vouchers.
"I think it's fair to say I won't be getting one of the 3800, which is unfortunate, but here's hoping the people that desperately need it get home to see their families."
Poet Hinemoana Baker is 10,765 in the queue.
"So I won't be coming home any time soon. I was already crying before it turned up. You read all the stories of everyone else as well. So the good thing is there are 3800 rooms filled with people who really need them, in really dire circumstances."
Baker earlier told Checkpoint it is "distressing and it feels a little bit humiliating to have to be taking a lottery ticket to come back home".
