An Air Force Hercules has carried out a high-risk mission to evacuate an injured person from Antarctica.
The Hercules headed to McMurdo Station late Sunday night and arrived back in Christchurch yesterday afternoon.
Night-vision goggles were used to land the plane on the ice runway because of the months-long winter darkness.
The member of the United States Antarctic Program is now in Christchurch being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
