The federal government in Australia says it is confident it has the numbers to toughen up its migration laws when the Senate votes on it either this week or in May.
If passed, the Migration Amendment (Strengthening the Character Test) Bill 2021 would be a headache on this side of the Ditch. It would see many hundreds more Kiwi-born offenders booked for a one-way ticket back to New Zealand.
But a leading immigration law specialist in Sydney doubts the coalition government will be able to muster the political numbers.
