Sick babies are being cared for in a playroom at Middlemore Hospital because it has run out of space in the regular wards.
Bed numbers have been slashed for both babies and older children because renovations are being done on the neonatal unit to make it bigger.
That comes as the South Auckland hospital is hit by a huge winter spike in sick children.
Health correspondent Rowan Quinn has the story.
