Hundreds of Cantabrians have spent the night next to packed bags, warned to be ready to move if rivers burst their banks.
While the rain has eased, waterways are continuing to drain a three-day deluge, and roads remain closed across the region.
The extent of the damage to the region is estimated to be in the tens of millions of dollars.
