Soiled carpets, walls covered in graffiti and a lack of communal space - these are just some of findings made by the Chief Ombudsman during inspections of acute mental health facilities.
In new reports, two of three places inspected last year were found to be not fit for purpose despite housing some of New Zealands most vulnerable mental health patients.
Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier spoke to Susie Ferguson.
