Christchurch city leaders are in shock after a young man died following an assault in the early hours of Saturday morning. 
The police have opened a homicide investigation, and believe they know who is responsible for assaulting the 18-year-old in the carpark of the Countdown supermarket on the corner of Moorhouse Ave and Madras Street.
He died in hospital yesterday. 
Christchurch City Council's deputy mayor, Andrew Turner, spoke to Corin Dann.
