A top Covid-19 advisor to the government says opening the borders will now have a minimal effect.
All vaccinated New Zealanders overseas will be able to return home and head straight into the community by the end of the week.
Strategic Covid-19 Public Health Advisory Group group head Sir David Skegg told Morning Report the added impact on the omicron outbreak will be very small.
The change kicks in from 11:59pm on Wednesday, so those who have already arrived from Australia can leave isolation from this point.
