The Queen has cancelled her Christmas plans due to the threat of Omicron.
It comes as England chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty warned everyone to reconsider their Christmas plans, to avoid the risk of infection.
On Wednesday the UK recorded more than 78,000 new infections in a single day - the highest day since the start of the pandemic.
The 95-year-old monarch usually hosts a lunch each year for her wider family before she departs for her Christmas stay at Sandringham.
Royal commentator Dickie Arbiter spoke to Corin Dann.
