From today, people will be able to move across the Auckland boundary if they are relocating permanently.
That includes people who need to get to a hall of residence for tertiary study.
Victoria University of Wellington students Claire Thomas and Pauline Abeleda have been stuck in Auckland since mid-August, having gone to visit family in what they expected would be just a two week long visit.
Abeleda hasn't been able to work shifts at her retail job in Wellington, but stopped receiving the wage subsidy when Wellington moved down to the level 2 alert level.
As soon as the government announced it would loosen its boundary rules for Auckland yesterday, they both jumped at the chance to buy tickets back to the capital.
Thomas and Abeleda spoke to Corin Dann.
