Education Ministry figures indicate the early childhood sector is going through tough times.
A little under 90 early learning services shut down in the twelve months to end of June, continuing a four-year run of high numbers of closures.
Only 109 opened, one of the lowest figures on record.
Early childhood centre owner Maria Johnson says people are a lot more cautious about opening new centres.
