Efforts to reduce the number of children and young people dying appear to have stagnated.
Its the finding of the government's Child and Mortality Review Committee, which analysed more than 2,600 deaths between 2015 and 2019.
The authors say the mortality rates also reflect a significant inequity, with M?ori and Pacific rangatahi far more likely to die.
Jamie Tahana reports.
Associate Minister of Health Peeni Henare responding in a statement focused on deaths among the very young.
He said that it's unacceptable that p?pi M?ori are six times more likely to die from sudden unexpected death in infancy.
He added that an evaluation of the National SUDI Prevention Programme is underway.
