An ex-truckie from Mosgiel whose friend's truck ran away, killing a pedestrian, lays the blame on police and transport agency Waka Kotahi. The death in 2010 in Dunedin, was followed by a similar death in 2019 in Wellington. The handbrake involved in both cases, called a Sanwa Seiki, was effectively banned only last month. But another type of truck handbrake, involved in 3 deaths since 2017, called a cardan shaft brake, remains in wide use. Bruce Mitchell of Mosgiel tried to get action after a crash in 2010 with one of his own trucks.
