A legal expert says he is disappointed the Corrections Minister won't acknowledge a judge's finding that treatment of Auckland Women's Prison inmates was degrading, cruel and inhumane.
Manukau District Court Judge David McNaughton made the ruling when assessing whether Mihi Bassett should have her sentence extended for an arson at the prison in 2019.
Minister Kelvin Davis says he is not taking the judge's ruling at face value, wanting to first hear from Corrections.
Associate Professor of Law - and co-president of Te Hunga Roia M?ori - Carwyn Jones told M?ni Dunlop the Minister needs to rethink his stance.
