In Westport, authorities still haven't been able to determine the full extent of the damage from the weekend's flooding.
The floodwaters haven't yet receded from some parts of town, which means the clean up can't get underway and neither can assessments of inundated homes.
Hundreds of people have spent as many as three nights away from home, after the Buller and Orowaiti Rivers topped their banks.
It's not yet known how many homes will be unihabitable.
Boil water notices remain in place for a number of communities on the West Coast, after the weekend's flooding.
Buller district deputy mayor Sharon Roche went to visit affected residents in evacuation centres yesterday.
She spoke to our reporter Sarah Robson.
