Crime gangs across the world have been tricked into using phone they thought were secure - but instead lead to raids and arrests across 16 countries, including New Zealand.
More than 800 suspects were arrested, and over 32 tons of drugs were seized along with firearms, luxury cars and more than $48 million in cash and cryptocurrencies.
After taking down two encrypted platforms crime across the globe were in the market for new secure phones.
The FBI created an app and installed it on modified mobile phones.
It then provided those phones via unsuspecting middlemen to more gangs operating in over 100 countries.
Former FBI agent and former CIA officer Tracy Walder spoke to Susie Ferguson.
