Auckland's Fibre network will be used to monitor earthquakes and better understand the city's volcanoes.
There are 53 recognised volcanoes in the Auckland Volcanic Field, and they pose a substantial natural hazard.
Small earthquakes could provide warning if volcanic activity were to occur, and improve community safety.
Victoria University lead researcher Dr Calum Chamberlain talks to Sarah Robson about how it would work.
