The planned overhaul of First Home Grants has been put off until next year.
The number of grants approved this year is on track to be the lowest since the scheme began seven years ago, despite a caps lift in April.
The grants offer up to $10,000 dollars towards a buyer's first home or $20,000 for a couple.
Housing Minister Megan Woods said a proposal to improve the scheme is ready for Cabinet approval, but the opposition said it was too little too late.
RNZ Political reporter Charlie Dreaver has the details.
