Minister for Oceans and Fisheries David Parker and Acting Minister of Conservation Ayesha Verrall have released the Government Strategy for revitalising the Hauraki Gulf, in the face of depleting fish resources.
This will mean 18 new marine reserves and restrictions on bottom trawling.
The Hauraki Gulf covers 1.2 million hectares of ocean, from Mangawhai, north of Auckland, to Waihi on the Coromandel Peninsula.
Reporter Jordan Bond spoke to Susie Ferguson.
