From earthworms to elephants; new research reveals 1557 species across the world have been eating plastic.
Co-author of the report, Massey University Research Associate Dr Gabriel Machovsky-Capuska says the new numbers are alarmingly high throughout terrestrial and freshwater species, not just marine life.
The new research, published in the journal Science, is the most up to date comprehensive report of different species' plastic ingestion.
Dr Machovsky-Capuska spoke to Susie Ferguson.
