Hundreds of people had to be evacuated in Canterbury on Sunday night due to flooding. It has been a night without much sleep for one mid-Canterbury family forced to flee their Hinds home when it became surrounded by flood waters.
Lashai Te Haate, her partner and their three young children had an hour to collect a few of their belongings late yesterday.
They spent the night at the welfare centre at the Hakatere Marae near Ashburton and spoke to Conan Young.
At this stage the town of Hinds remains completely surrounded by flood waters which have also closed State Highway 1, which runs through the settlement.
