Oxygen levels in lakes worldwide are in rapid decline, with potentially dire consequences for biodiversity.
Almost four hundred lakes have been tested by the US Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, including lakes Taupo, Tarawera, and Brunner in Aotearoa.
It's well-documented that oxygen is being lost in oceans - but the study has proven it's even more severe in freshwater lakes.
Research author and University of Waikato Environmental Research Institute senior research officer Christopher McBride spoke to Susie Ferguson.
