The first investigation into abuse in care of Pacific people in this country opens today.
The Royal Commission of Inquiry hearing will take place in Mangere over the next two weeks.
It will look at abuse of Pacific people in both state and faith-based institutions between 1950 and 1999.
Lead counsel at the hearing, Tania Sharkey told RNZ's reporter, Andrew McRae it's harder for Pacific people to come forward because of the shame associated with abuse.
