This year's gun buyback and amnesty saw more money paid out to the police than it did to firearms owners.
Gun owners who handed in their firearms as part of the buyback got just over $2.4 million while the total cost of the scheme was just over $6 million.
Administrative costs outweighed the money spent on taking dangerous guns out of circulation.
