The Police are assuring the public new tightened rules for officers photographing young people will not lead to more rangatahi Maori being arrested.
They are being commended for the changes, which mean the police can now only take photos or fingerprints of young people if they have been arrested or summonsed.
All existing pictures of youths on devices must be deleted.
But a lawyer and a Maori academic have raised concerns the procedure could incentivise officers to arrest young people rather than just give them a warning, in order to secure a photograph.
The Police's Director of Community Partnerships and Prevention Superintendent Eric Tibbott spoke to Morning Report about the new rules.
