Top tier companies need to work harder if New Zealand expects to compete on the world stage, according to the Productivity Commission.
Its latest report on the top 30 companies, known as frontier firms, shows their productivity is on average less than half found in similar small advanced economies. 
Commission chair Ganesh Nana told reporter Andrew McRae New Zealand is becoming less and less competitive, which hurts everyone.
