Raging rivers across Tairāwhiti have prompted further evacuations overnight.
Civil Defence has issued a fresh flood warning for the Hikuwai River, which at midnight was at 12.2 metres and still rising.
Residents have been evaccuated from Manutuke, Te Karaka along with parts of Tologa Bay and Tokomaru Bay as well as smaller settlements up the coast.
Gisborne is cut off with State Highway 35 between Gisborne and Potaka and State Highway 2 closed north and south closed due to flooding and washouts.
Residents are being told to consider all surface water around the district to be contaminated.
Corin Dann spoke to Gisborne Mayor Rehette Stoltz about how the region was responding to the flood threats.
