All of the Waikato DHB's internal IT systems including computers, phones and pagers have now been unoperational for more than 24 hours, leaving some patients awaiting surgery unsure when they'll get it, and others left in the dark about clinic or outpatient appointments.
Medical authorities say the shutdown serves to underline how dependent the health service has become on functioning IT.
Dr Ruth Large is the chair of New Zealand Telehealth and a former clinical director of information services at Waikato DHB.
