The national grid operator Transpower is downplaying speculation about low hydro lake levels and the potential for power shortages.
The lakes are at their lowest levels in 25 years, and the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter, which uses 13 percent of the country's power, has agreed to cut back to help ensure security of the electricity supply.
Stephen Jay is the general manager of operations at Transpower.
