Graham Duggan was expecting to be counting down his final weeks in Ukraine working for the Red Cross in late February.
The Porirua-born aid worker was down to his final three months.
Now he's counting the long period of work ahead of him as Eastern Europe deals with the "massive, massive change of context" as a result of Russia's invasion of Urkraine.
He spent last night sleeping as best he could in a basement in the capital Kyiv.
He spoke to Corin Dann.
