Wellington retailers in the central shopping district fear a plan to ban cars will see businesses abandon the area.
Under the proposal, an area known as the Golden Mile - Lambton Quay, Manners and Willis Streets and Courtenay Place - would only be open to buses, cyclists and pedestrians.
Councillors say progress is finally being made in the beleaguered $6.4b Let's Get Wellington Moving programme.
