A miniaturized array device called Vertical-I with its membrane oriented vertically in reference to the table surface finds a protein synthesis yield 144% higher than that of a horizontal device. Plus, ?-glucuronidase reaches the synthesis yield plateau after 2 h versus 4 h. When clogging of membrane pores is confirmed, the Vertical-II is designed to fit into a standard 96-well plate holder, increasing protein expression 406% over the horizontal device and consuming 5 times fewer reagents than a commercial device.
