Health experts and community groups say migrants to Australia are not getting the help they need to tackle drug addiction.

A New South Wales Parliamentary inquiry has been told more culturally specific and in-language programs are needed to address the ice epidemic that's affecting migrant communities.

Afghan refugee Fawad Raoofi has had a long road to recovery.

He first smoked crystal methamphetamine, known commonly as ice,  at the age of 17 and spent years in the grip of addiction.

He was unable to hold down a job and turned to crime to fund his habit.

That landed him in prison on multiple occasions for drug, theft and driving offences.

He says for years he was afraid to seek help from his family and community.
