Hey SiF folks,

You've heard Maggie Koerth-Baker on our Science Corner episodes as our fun and funny guest expert on the science of sex.  You might have checked out her work on BoingBoing.net where she is the science editor or read her book,Before the Lights Go Out: Conquering the Energy Crisis Before it Conquers Us.  Lately she has been writing about a more personal subject; her struggles getting pregnant as well as her decisions around abortion and miscarriage when she recently had a non-viable pregnancy.

I wanted to share her articles on the SiF blog for a few reasons.  First of all, I know our listeners love Maggie as a guest on the show and care what is going on with her.  Secondly, there is too much silence around these subjects: infertility, abortion, miscarriage, America's laws and the deep divide around abortion legislation.  People who face these struggles and decisions often make them in silence.  We rarely hear personal stories from people about what their experience was like and how they made their decisions.  We almost never hear about what decisions are simply not available to what people based on issues of privilege.  Maggie has written two important and personal articles on these topics.  She is putting these out there at a time when the decisions are still new and emotionally raw.  This is a brave act and her articles are beautiful.  You should read them.  Here isthe firstandthe second.

Of course, the SiF Crew is sending much love to Maggie and her husband.  I know this is a topic that generates intense emotions for lots of people.  Feel free to comment below but please keep your comments respectful or I will take them down.

All Best,
Laura Rad
