When we have made a bad choice with terrible consequences, how wonderful to have the possibility and ability to change our mind and turn back---- One assumption made by Solomon in 1 KINGS 8-46-53----1- WHAT IS REPENTANCE---Verse 47 --Verse 48 ----2- WHAT MUST HAPPEN TO ME BEFORE REPENTANCE---Verse 47 - when they come to themselves . . . -- Literal meaning- return to their heart-- Chinese translation- ---And God often used ----------------- to bring it to pass- -Yet when they come to themselves in the land where they were carried captive, and repent . . .------3- HOW DO I KNOW IF MY REPENTANCE IS GENUINE----A- I will confess with my mouth--Verse 47 - And make supplication, saying, 'We have sinned and done wrong, we have committed wickedness'.---- -B- I will confess from my heart--Verse 48 - When they return to You with all their heart and with all their soul . . . ------4- WHAT WILL I DESIRE AS A SIGN OF TRUE REPENTANCE- ---A- I Will Desire Pardon--Verse 50 - And forgive Your people who have sinned against You and all their transgressions which they have transgressed against You . . .------ -B- I Will Desire Mercy--Verse 50 - . . . and grant them compassion before those who took them captive, that they may have compassion on them . . . --Cf.
