In 1961, a small Irish contingent were sent to the Congo by the United Nations. 155 Irish soldiers held off 3,000 men while waiting for relief. The Secretary-General of the United Nations died in a plane crash in September 1961. The circumstances still remains unclear. There is evidence the plane was shot down and a CIA report claimed the KGB was responsible. The US Secretary of Commerce, Ronald H. Brown, perished in a plane crash into a mountain near Dubrovnik, Croatia. April 2010- 96 people were killed when their Polish Air Force Flight 101 crashed near the Russian city of Smolensk. The president of Poland was on board. The plane was enroute to pay their respects to the victims of the Katyn Massacre. Former Senator Ted Stevens was one of 9 people on board a small plane in Alaska when into a brush and rock-covered mountainside. There were 4 survivors.
