The Death of Kobe Bryant - Crash in Calabasas #31 - a podcast by SMP

What caused Kobe Bryant's helicopter to crash at high speed into a Calabasas hillside?  This week on Solvable Mysteries we discuss the tragic and mysterious death of Kobe Bryant, who perished along with a pilot and seven other passengers when his chartered S-76 Sikorsky helicopter suddenly plunged into the fog in Calabasas and collided at 160 knots into the hard ground.

Welcome to Solvable Mysteries Podcast, hosted by Juras Sim and co-hosted by Glenn Highcove.  During this episode we discuss the specific details investigators have released about the January 26th crash.  Specifically we retrace the flight and closely examine the last moments where the helicopter suddenly turned left and descended at over 4000 feet per minute.  Our conclusion was that the helicopter was not simply the victim of IIMC, inadvertent entry into instrument meteorological conditions, but that something went wrong with the helicopter on a technical level. The helicopter was almost 30 years old, and while in good repair, could have suffered a technical failure, a bird strike, or otherwise failed in some way that caused a sudden and uncontrollable descent. We also consider that the pilot, Ara Zoboyan, could have had a sudden health condition or incident impact his ability to pilot the helicopter, which had no co-pilot for this flight.  What was tragic was that the crash happened just as the helicopter was about to break through the surrounding clouds, back into visibility and IFR.
