○ James 1:1-18

§ James 1:2-4

□ Perseverance = endurance 

® Endurance- the ability or strength to continue or last, especially despite fatigue, stress, or other adversity 

◊ Read Isaiah 30:20-21

§ James 1:5-8

□ If you lack wisdom, ask God for it, who gives it generously

® Read 1 Kings 3:9-12, Psalms 19:7

□ But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt….like a wave of the sea, tossed by the wind

® This reminds me of Matthew 14, when Jesus was walking on the water. When Peter first asked Jesus to call him out onto the water, he believed and was walking on water! But it says in verse 30 "But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and began to sink"

□ Double-minded

® The NLT says "their loyalty divided between God and the world; the definition means undecided

◊ We like to live in this "gray area" when it comes to our faith sometimes. We live in the "sorta" mentality, but when it comes to maturing in our faith, there comes along with it a decision to be certain and steadfast

◊ Reference the Book of Daniel, with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego…whether God saved them from the fiery furnace was God's business, but regardless they refused to compromise their faith

§ James 1:12

□ We can persevere under trial because God is faithful. That "crown of life" is the promised eternal inheritance (Hebrews 9:15)

§ James 1:13-15

□ We are tempted because of what we have going on within ourselves, don't put that on God.

□ Reminds me of Adam's response in Genesis 3, after Adam and Eve ate fruit of the Tree of the knowledge of good and evil….Adam blamed his actions on God and Eve, negating any responsibility, as if he wasn’t the one who also ate the fruit  

§ James 1: 17-18

□ Every Good and Perfect gift comes from God

□ God does not change

The Jewish believers were the "first fruits" or the first yield of a greater harvest that was yet to be gathered as a result of the gospel spreading throughout the world.
