Show Notes:

○ James 1: 19-27

○ James 1:19-21

§ Quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to become angry

§ Human anger does NOT produce the righteousness that God desires

□ (Becoming angry at injustice, like Moses when he saw the golden calf the children of Israel had made, or when Jesus flipped tables in the temple is NOT the anger James is talking about here)

□ Read:

® Ephesians 4:25-30

◊ (This is Paul talking about putting off our old selves that have been corrupted by deceitful desires, and being made new in the attitudes of our minds, putting on our new selves)

○ James 1:22-25

§ Don’t just listen to the word, actually do what it says…otherwise you are only fooling yourselves (NLT)

§ The children of Israel did this in Exodus 32

□ Read Exodus 32:1

® Moses had only been on the mountain for 40 days!

§ Don't get the revelation of what you actually look like, warts and all, and then turn around and think " ahh I'm not so bad" as if you didn’t see the eye crusties, dried up drool or day-old spinach in your teeth.

§ James tells us how to not look in the mirror and then turn around and forget:

□ Look intently into the perfect law that gives freedom

□ Continue in that perfect law (new covenant)

□ Not forgetting what you heard, but putting it into action

§ This is not impossible to do because James already tells us that the word has been planted in us, we just have to humbly accept or submit to it

§ When we start to look intently into this mirror (the word) we are able to see the areas we need to work on and most importantly, we come to the understanding that Jesus has already taken care of it. He is sanctifying us, cleaning us up, so that we will be a truer reflection of the word to others

○ James 1:26-27

§ …Consider themselves religious, but can't control their tongue… is lying to themselves and their religion is worthless

□ Will talk more about taming the tongue in chapter 3

§ What God does consider as a pure and faultless religion, is to take care of people and keep oneself from being polluted by the world

□ Read Matthew 25:35-36, 40
