Show Notes:
○ James 2:1-13
○ James 2:1-9
§ Believers must not show favoritism
§ God does NOT show favoritism and that is not new and it doesn't only show up in the new testament. That's old testament…that’s law (Remember, James is writing to Jewish believers who would have been very familiar with the law)
□ (appears in Exodus and Leviticus, and deals with not showing partiality, especially in a lawsuit)
□ We can relate to that today…we see innocent people convicted or receive unfair sentences, often times because they couldn't afford a good lawyer or they were up against someone or a corporation that had an army of lawyers, taking advantage of those less fortunate
§ But James uses the specific example of a rich man and a poor man coming into the meeting, the assembly…and challenges our hearts on how we would treat each one?
□ Read Galatians 2:1-6 (…Paul had spoken with some esteemed Jewish leaders and remember, some of the Jews were saying that Gentile believers had to be circumcised according to the old law, despite being under the new covenant…go read Romans 2 & 3 for more!)
□ Now go back to James 2:3-4
® Have you not discriminated and become judges with evil thoughts?
® I don't think James is talking about treating everyone like they are your best friend. But I do think he is talking about treating everyone with love, respect, and humanity
□ Reread James 2:5-9
® Read Luke 16:19-21 (pause, then pick back up) 22-25
® Remember how James 1:27 ended….religion that God accepts as pure and faultless is to look after orphans and widows and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world…
○ James 2:10-11
§ For whoever keeps the law but stumbles over one point is a lawbreaker
□ Flush idea out with a few examples then go read Romans 3: 20-24
○ James 2:12-13
§ Speak and act as one judged by the new covenant that gives freedom…judgement without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgement
□ Read Luke 6:35-38
□ Read Matthew 18:23-35
