Christiana Peterson and her husband went from knowing little about rural life to farming and living in an Intentional Community for 8 years.

In her book "Mystics and Misfits: Meeting God Through St. Francis and Other Unlikely Saints", Peterson, takes us through this fraught and blessed journey.

From the struggles of family life which included mental illness, sickness, death, to the frustrations of community life, difficult crop seasons, welcoming strange strangers, building relationships, and making decisions with communal equanimity. Many fruitful lessons were both hard won and came like a spiritually refining fire.

Our conversation includes really interesting details about living communally, how she learned about the life and ways of St Francis and developed the practice of writing letters to him and other unlikely saints as she lived that season of her life. She speaks with me of some of the rigors of that time: from farm life and mothering four children, and to navigating the reality of living within very close proximity of people of the community, and lessons learned.

We also talk about contemplative forms of prayer, the spiritual teachers and writers that influenced her and the spiritual practices used with her children and within their family to help form them spiritually to have a heart for God and others.
